How Side by Side Reader is designed

This app is designed primarily for desktop, tablet, and unfolded foldable displays so both reading panes can remain visible together.

Mobile phones are supported too. On narrower phone layouts, including common 19.5:9 and 20:9 displays, the Japanese pane moves below the source pane.

Wider and more balanced layouts such as desktop monitors, tablets, unfolded foldables, 4:3, 1:1, and similar displays retain the side-by-side workspace when enough horizontal space is available.

Synchronized scrolling can be enabled or disabled. On desktop and unfolded foldables, Phase 11 retains the stable-block synchronization: the pane you actively scroll becomes the leader. On narrow stacked mobile layouts, the panes scroll independently; use the Japanese/Source jump button in each pane header to move the counterpart to the same semantic block and then bring that pane into view. When a foldable is opened/closed or the viewport crosses layouts, the reader preserves the last known semantic reading position and re-aligns the panes when returning to side-by-side mode.

Translation privacy: local Hugging Face translation keeps extracted text inside the application workload. If the local engine is unavailable and fallback is enabled, only extracted readable text—not raw HTML or scripts—is sent to MyMemory. Avoid using private or authenticated URLs.
