Katakana for Technical Japanese

Recognize core katakana and use familiar technology loanwords as anchors without assuming Japanese pronunciation is identical to English.

30 min
Before you begin
  • Complete the Hiragana Boot Camp and understand the five Japanese vowel sounds.
Why this matters

Technical Japanese is full of katakana: サーバー, コード, テスト, バグ, データ, アプリ, システム. That makes katakana one of the fastest ways for a developer to begin recognizing useful Japanese at work.

1. Katakana often signals borrowed vocabulary

Katakana represents Japanese sounds just like hiragana does, but it is commonly used for loanwords, foreign names, emphasis, and many modern technical terms. The key is to read the Japanese sound sequence instead of forcing English spelling onto the characters.
