あげる / くれる / もらう: Giving & Receiving Perspective
Choose giving/receiving verbs based on the direction of benefit relative to the speaker.
- に and から.
Japanese encodes viewpoint. The same transfer is described differently depending on whether something goes outward, comes toward you/your group, or is received.
1. Track direction from the speaker's viewpoint
あげる: giver gives outward. くれる: someone gives to me/my in-group. もらう: receiver receives.
2. Keep giver, receiver, and object separate
Study the examples and identify the structural pattern before relying on the English translation.
Natural: I gave Tanaka a book.
Structure: I topic — Tanaka to — book — gave-outward
あげる.
Natural: Tanaka gave me a book.
Structure: Tanaka subject — me to — book — gave-toward-me
くれる.
Natural: I received a book from Tanaka.
Structure: I topic — Tanaka from/source — book — received
もらう; に can mark source with people.
