～てあげる / ～てくれる / ～てもらう: Actions as Favors
Extend giving/receiving perspective from objects to helpful actions.
- Giving/receiving perspective and て-form.
This expresses who did something for whom: helped me check, I explained it for them, I had someone review it for me.
1. The て-form action is the 'thing' transferred as benefit
Vて + あげる/くれる/もらう adds viewpoint to an action.
2. Describe collaboration
Study the examples and identify the structural pattern before relying on the English translation.
Natural: I taught Japanese to/for my friend.
Structure: friend to — Japanese teach-て — gave benefit
Action outward.
Natural: Tanaka checked the settings for me/us.
Structure: Tanaka — settings check-て — gave toward us
Helpful incoming action.
Natural: I had Tanaka look at the code / Tanaka looked at it for me.
Structure: Tanaka from — code look-て — received
Receiver viewpoint.
3. あげる can sound presumptuous in some contexts
Because it explicitly frames your action as a benefit you give, avoid treating it as a universal translation of 'do for someone.' Learn perspective first, then observe natural usage.
