Frequency Adverbs
Describe how often actions occur using いつも, よく, ときどき, あまり, and ぜんぜん.
- Polite positive/negative verbs.
Frequency turns one action into a routine description: often review logs, sometimes work remotely, rarely deploy manually.
1. Frequency words live on a continuum
Place them on a rough scale instead of memorizing isolated translations.
2. Positive-friendly forms
いつも, よく, ときどき commonly pair with positive verbs.
Natural: I often check logs.
Structure: often — logs — object — check.
Routine.
Natural: I sometimes work from home.
Structure: sometimes — at-home — work.
Routine variation.
3. あまり / ぜんぜん pair with negative predicates in this beginner pattern
Think not much/not often and not at all.
Natural: I don't use the phone very often.
Structure: not-much — phone — object — do-not-use.
Low frequency.
Natural: I don't use paper at all.
Structure: not-at-all — paper — object — do-not-use.
Near-zero frequency.
4. Routine histogram
Write ten habits and place each on the frequency scale. Use all five adverbs at least once.
INTERACTIVE WORKSHEET
4. Routine histogram
Create 10 routine sentences and plot them on an always→never scale. Check あまり/ぜんぜん with negative forms.
Tip: on a foldable or tablet, use your pen directly on the page. Your strokes are saved in this browser as you work.
4. Routine histogram
Create 10 routine sentences and plot them on an always→never scale. Check あまり/ぜんぜん with negative forms.
5. Read and retain frequency chunks
Context matters more than one-word equivalence.
Tsundoku Reading Nook
Why here: Frequency becomes intuitive when attached to recurring actions.
How to use it for this lesson: Find habitual actions and identify adverb + verb polarity.
Inspect routines →Japanese Adaptive Recall
Why here: The negative pairing is worth targeted recall if it causes errors.
How to use it for this lesson: Use complete chunks such as あまり~ません.
Review frequency patterns →Mastery checkpoint
Answer from memory. Treat every miss as a debugging signal: inspect the explanation, repair the rule, and retry.
