の Nominalization: Turn an Action into a Thing
Use plain verb + の to treat an action/event as a noun-like unit.
- Plain verb forms.
This enables patterns such as 'reading Japanese is fun' and 'I like programming' without inventing a separate noun.
1. Clause + の packages an event as a noun-like unit
日本語を読む is an action clause. 日本語を読むの can function as the topic/object of another predicate.
2. Use packaged actions with adjectives/preferences
I like writing programs.', 'sample': 'プログラムを書くのが好きです。', 'reading': 'プログラム を かく の が すき です。', 'natural': {'en': 'I like writing programs.', 'es': 'Consulta el significado natural en español.'}, 'literal': {'en': '[program write]-nominalizer focus — liked', 'es': 'Observa la estructura literal japonesa y el orden de sus componentes.'}, 'note': {'en': 'Action as preference target.', 'es': 'Observa la forma anterior al patrón y la relación que establece entre las ideas.'}}, {'label': 'Getting up early is difficult.', 'sample': '早く起きるのは難しいです。', 'reading': 'はやく おきる の は むずかしい です。', 'natural': {'en': 'Getting up early is difficult.', 'es': 'Consulta el significado natural en español.'}, 'literal': {'en': '[early get-up]-nominalizer topic — difficult', 'es': 'Observa la estructura literal japonesa y el orden de sus componentes.'}, 'note': {'en': 'Action evaluation.', 'es': 'Observa la forma anterior al patrón y la relación que establece entre las ideas.'}}]
3. Do not confuse nominalizer の with explanatory のです
They share の historically/structurally, but the immediate job differs: one packages a clause into a noun-like unit; the other creates explanatory framing.
4. Action-as-object worksheet
Write ten activities and evaluate them as fun, difficult, easy, useful, liked, or disliked using Vるのは / Vるのが.
INTERACTIVE WORKSHEET
4. Action-as-object worksheet
Create 10 clause→nominalized-action sentences. Draw a box around the complete V...の unit.
Tip: on a foldable or tablet, use your pen directly on the page. Your strokes are saved in this browser as you work.
4. Action-as-object worksheet
Create 10 clause→nominalized-action sentences. Draw a box around the complete V...の unit.
5. Visualize clause boundaries
Use the linked Manabi Kōbō tool for focused transfer practice.
Language IDE
Why here: Nominalization is much easier when the embedded clause boundary is visible.
How to use it for this lesson: Build [日本語を読む] + の + は + 楽しいです and [コードを書く] + の + が + 好きです.
Inspect nominalized clauses →Mastery checkpoint
Answer from memory. If something fails, identify whether the bug is conjugation, particle role, or interpretation before retrying.
