~なければならない: Must / Obligation
Build and recognize the standard obligation pattern Vなければならない / polite Vなければなりません.
- Plain negative verb forms.
Procedures and responsibilities often require 'must': must check, must submit, must finish, must not forget.
1. Japanese obligation uses a double-negative-style logic
A useful structural reading: 'if [not doing] is not acceptable' → therefore must do.
2. Use obligation for genuine requirements
[{'label': 'I must submit the report today.', 'sample': '今日、レポートを出さなければなりません。', 'reading': 'きょう、レポート を ださなければ なりません。', 'natural': {'en': 'I must submit the report today.', 'es': 'Consulta el significado natural en español.'}, 'literal': {'en': "today report submit-if-not — won't-do", 'es': 'Observa la estructura literal japonesa y el orden de sus componentes.'}, 'note': {'en': 'Obligation.', 'es': 'Observa la forma anterior al patrón y la relación que establece entre las ideas.'}}, {'label': 'I must check the settings.', 'sample': '設定を確認しなければなりません。', 'reading': 'せってい を かくにんしなければ なりません。', 'natural': {'en': 'I must check the settings.', 'es': 'Consulta el significado natural en español.'}, 'literal': {'en': "settings check-if-not — won't-do", 'es': 'Observa la estructura literal japonesa y el orden de sus componentes.'}, 'note': {'en': 'Technical requirement.', 'es': 'Observa la forma anterior al patrón y la relación que establece entre las ideas.'}}, {'label': 'I must change the password.', 'sample': 'パスワードを変えなければなりません。', 'reading': 'パスワード を かえなければ なりません。', 'natural': {'en': 'I must change the password.', 'es': 'Consulta el significado natural en español.'}, 'literal': {'en': "password change-if-not — won't-do", 'es': 'Observa la estructura literal japonesa y el orden de sus componentes.'}, 'note': {'en': 'Requirement.', 'es': 'Observa la forma anterior al patrón y la relación que establece entre las ideas.'}}]
3. Spoken Japanese often shortens obligation expressions
Forms such as ~なきゃ can appear casually, but master the full structure first so the contraction has something to compress.
4. Requirement-to-obligation worksheet
Write ten requirements from study, work, or daily life. Convert each dictionary verb through negative → なければ → full obligation.

Tip: on a foldable or tablet, use your pen directly on the page. Your strokes are saved in this browser as you work.

Why here: Skipping directly to the long surface form hides where mistakes occur.
How to use it for this lesson: Transform 書く, 読む, する, 来る, 確認する through each obligation stage.
