から: Because / So

Use から after a reason clause to explain why a decision, action, or evaluation follows.

30 min
Before you begin
  • Basic polite noun/adjective/verb sentences.
Why this matters

Technical communication is full of causes: because the test failed, we will check it; because the system is old, it is slow. から is the first major tool for connecting reason to action.

1. Put the reason before から

A beginner-safe pattern is [reason] から、[result/action]. Structurally, から marks the preceding statement as the reason.

Reason → result
CAUSEテストが難しいです
から
RESULTもう一度確認します
Because the test is difficult, I will check again. テストが難しいですから、もう一度確認します。 テスト が むずかしい です から、もういちど かくにんします。

Natural: Because the test is difficult, I will check again.

Structure: test is difficult — because — again check

Professional reason.

Because there is a meeting tomorrow, I will prepare. 明日は会議がありますから、準備します。 あした は かいぎ が あります から、じゅんびします。

Natural: Because there is a meeting tomorrow, I will prepare.

Structure: tomorrow meeting exists — because — prepare

Schedule reason.

Because this system is old, it is slow. このシステムは古いですから、遅いです。 この システム は ふるい です から、おそい です。

Natural: Because this system is old, it is slow.

Structure: system old — because — slow

Cause/evaluation.
