ませんか / ましょう / ましょうか

Invite someone, propose a shared action, and offer to act politely.

25 min
Before you begin
  • Polite negative and positive verbs.
Why this matters

Professional collaboration needs soft proposals: Shall we review it? Would you like to meet?

1. ~ませんか is a soft invitation

Attach か to the polite negative form. Naturally it functions as a polite invitation.

Would you like to have lunch together? 一緒に昼ご飯を食べませんか。 いっしょ に ひるごはん を たべません か。

Natural: Would you like to have lunch together?

Structure: together — lunch — won't-eat?

Social invitation.

Would you like to review it at 3? 三時に確認しませんか。 さんじ に かくにんしません か。

Natural: Would you like to review it at 3?

Structure: at 3 — won't-check?

Work proposal.
