~とき: When / At the Time
Use verb/adjective/noun forms before とき and understand how form choice affects time relationship.
- Plain present/past forms.
You can describe what you do when testing, what happened when an error appeared, or conditions at a particular time.
1. The form before とき helps locate the embedded event
Vるとき often frames before/during an action; Vたとき frames after/when that action occurred, depending on verb/context.
2. Use とき with practical events
Study the examples and identify the structural pattern before relying on the English translation.
Natural: When I test, I look at the logs.
Structure: test — time — logs look
Habit/context.
Natural: When the error appeared, I took a screenshot.

Past event.
Natural: When I'm busy, I drink coffee.
