GUIDED PATH · PHASE 5
Guided Japanese Course
A mastery path for complete beginners and technology professionals.
HOW THIS COURSE WORKS
Follow the path. Advance by mastery.
The primary path tells you what to do next. You can still open any available lesson, but completion is based on checkpoints rather than calendar days.

Tracks 0–10
TRACK 1 · 1-12
Numbers 101–100,000
Construct larger Japanese numbers using 百, 千, and 万, including key sound changes.
- Numbers 1–100.
Large values appear in prices, user counts, logs, inventory, metrics, and identifiers. Japanese groups large numbers around 万 (10,000), which is a different mental boundary from English thousands.
1. Learn the Japanese place-value anchors
百 = 100, 千 = 1,000, 万 = 10,000. Japanese naturally treats 10,000 as a named unit: 25,000 is 二万五千, not 'twenty-five thousand' compositionally in the English way.
2. Hundreds and thousands contain sound changes
High-value irregular forms include 三百(さんびゃく), 六百(ろっぴゃく), 八百(はっぴゃく), 三千(さんぜん), and 八千(はっせん). These are pronunciation optimizations; store them as complete chunks.
3. Compile larger values
Decompose from the largest Japanese unit downward. 23,450 = 二万三千四百五十.
4. Metrics worksheet
Write ten realistic values (users, yen, records, log lines, IDs). Decompose each into Japanese place-value chunks and write the reading. Include 300, 800, 3,000, 8,000, and 23,450.
INTERACTIVE WORKSHEET
4. Metrics worksheet
For each value write: digits → kanji/place-value chunks → kana reading. Star sound-change values.
Tip: on a foldable or tablet, use your pen directly on the page. Your strokes are saved in this browser as you work.
4. Metrics worksheet
For each value write: digits → kanji/place-value chunks → kana reading. Star sound-change values.
5. Review only the irregular chunks
The composition algorithm is regular; the pronunciation mutations deserve targeted recall.
Japanese Adaptive Recall
Why here: Sound-change chunks such as さんびゃく and はっせん are compact, high-value retrieval targets.
How to use it for this lesson: Add only irregular hundreds/thousands that hesitate. Use digit → spoken Japanese prompts.
Review number sound changes →Mastery checkpoint
Answer from memory. Use the explanations after checking to debug any miss before moving on.
