~たい Extra: Negative, Past & Questions
Extend ~たい into don't want to, wanted to, didn't want to, and polite desire questions.
- ~たい and い-adjective conjugation.
Real planning includes changing intent, past intent, and asking what someone wants to do.
1. Conjugate ~たい like an い-adjective
たい→たくない, たかった, たくなかった.
2. Put time and polarity around intent
[{'label': "I don't want to work overtime today.", 'sample': '今日は残業したくないです。', 'reading': 'きょう は ざんぎょうしたくない です。', 'natural': {'en': "I don't want to work overtime today.", 'es': 'Consulta el significado natural en español.'}, 'literal': {'en': 'today topic — overtime — do-not-want', 'es': 'Observa la estructura literal japonesa y el orden de sus componentes.'}, 'note': {'en': 'Work preference.', 'es': 'Observa la forma que precede al patrón y la función que cumple dentro de la oración.'}}, {'label': 'I wanted to check the logs yesterday.', 'sample': '昨日ログを確認したかったです。', 'reading': 'きのう ログ を かくにんしたかった です。', 'natural': {'en': 'I wanted to check the logs yesterday.', 'es': 'Consulta el significado natural en español.'}, 'literal': {'en': 'yesterday — logs — wanted-to-check', 'es': 'Observa la estructura literal japonesa y el orden de sus componentes.'}, 'note': {'en': 'Past desire.', 'es': 'Observa la forma que precede al patrón y la función que cumple dentro de la oración.'}}, {'label': 'What do you want to study?', 'sample': '何を勉強したいですか。', 'reading': 'なに を べんきょうしたい です か。', 'natural': {'en': 'What do you want to study?', 'es': '¿Qué do you want to study?'}, 'literal': {'en': 'what — object — want-to-study — question', 'es': 'Observa la estructura literal japonesa y el orden de sus componentes.'}, 'note': {'en': 'Ask listener desire.', 'es': 'Observa la forma que precede al patrón y la función que cumple dentro de la oración.'}}, {'label': 'Where do you want to go?', 'sample': 'どこへ行きたいですか。', 'reading': 'どこ へ いきたい です か。', 'natural': {'en': 'Where do you want to go?', 'es': 'Consulta el significado natural en español.'}, 'literal': {'en': 'where — direction — want-to-go — question', 'es': 'Observa la estructura literal japonesa y el orden de sus componentes.'}, 'note': {'en': 'Destination question.', 'es': 'Observa la forma que precede al patrón y la función que cumple dentro de la oración.'}}]
3. Asking differs from asserting another person's internal state
~たいですか directly asks the listener. Avoid treating another person's desire as known fact without appropriate grammar/context.
4. Desire-state test cases
Choose five verbs. For each, write want / don't want / wanted / didn't want. Add five listener questions.
INTERACTIVE WORKSHEET
4. Desire-state test cases
Create a 5×4 desire matrix plus 5 ~たいですか questions. Include technical and everyday verbs.
Tip: on a foldable or tablet, use your pen directly on the page. Your strokes are saved in this browser as you work.
4. Desire-state test cases
Create a 5×4 desire matrix plus 5 ~たいですか questions. Include technical and everyday verbs.
5. Review only transformations that hesitate
Repeated full-sentence retrieval is more useful than isolated suffix cards.
Japanese Adaptive Recall
Why here: The たくない / たかった / たくなかった forms can blur together.
How to use it for this lesson: Use one useful verb across all four forms and retrieve from meaning/time prompts.
Review desire forms →Mastery checkpoint
Answer from memory. If you miss one, identify whether the failure was vocabulary, conjugation, particle choice, or meaning before retrying.
