Qualifying Nouns: Put a Clause Before the Noun

Use plain clauses directly before nouns to describe which person, tool, file, place, or event you mean.

  • Plain clauses and ~ている.
Why this matters

This is a major Japanese sentence-building leap: 'the file I checked', 'the person wearing glasses', 'the tool we used yesterday'.

1. Japanese puts the describing clause before the noun

There is no relative pronoun equivalent to English 'that/which/who' in the basic structure.
