～と言う: Saying, Quoting & Naming
Use と言います for reported/direct speech and という for names/labels.
- Plain clause + と architecture.
You need to report what someone said, identify terminology, and explain what something is called.
1. と marks quoted content before 言う
The quoted clause can be direct or reported depending on context.
2. Report statements

3. という can attach a name/description to a noun
「Manabi Kōbō」というサイト = a site called 'Manabi Kōbō'. This is an early example of a clause/phrase modifying a noun.
4. Meeting-notes quotation sheet
Write 6 fictional statements from a meeting, then report each with ～と言いました. Add 4 terminology/name examples with ～という.
