Tracks 0–10
TRACK 6 · 6-7
欲しい: Want a Thing
Use N が 欲しいです to express wanting a noun/object and distinguish it from Vたい.
- ~たい and adjective behavior.
Track 4 taught wanting to do an action. 欲しい covers wanting a thing: a new laptop, more time, documentation, feedback, help resources.
1. Action desire and object desire are different patterns
Vたい = want to do. Nが欲しい = want a thing.
2. Use 欲しい with concrete resources
[{'label': 'I want a new computer.', 'sample': '新しいパソコンが欲しいです。', 'reading': 'あたらしい パソコン が ほしい です。', 'natural': {'en': 'I want a new computer.', 'es': 'Consulta el significado natural en español.'}, 'literal': {'en': 'new computer — focus — wanted/desirable', 'es': 'Observa la estructura literal japonesa y el orden de sus componentes.'}, 'note': {'en': 'Object desire.', 'es': 'Observa si la oración describe una acción, un estado resultante, un deseo, un intento o una preparación.'}}, {'label': 'I want more time.', 'sample': 'もっと時間が欲しいです。', 'reading': 'もっと じかん が ほしい です。', 'natural': {'en': 'I want more time.', 'es': 'Consulta el significado natural en español.'}, 'literal': {'en': 'more time — focus — wanted', 'es': 'Observa la estructura literal japonesa y el orden de sus componentes.'}, 'note': {'en': 'Resource desire.', 'es': 'Observa si la oración describe una acción, un estado resultante, un deseo, un intento o una preparación.'}}, {'label': 'I want Japanese materials.', 'sample': '日本語の資料が欲しいです。'
3. 欲しい behaves like an い-adjective
欲しくないです = do not want. 欲しかったです = wanted.
4. Resource wish list
Write ten things/resources you would like: five professional/study and five personal. Then write three things you do not want.
INTERACTIVE WORKSHEET
4. Resource wish list
Create 10 Nが欲しいです + 3 Nが欲しくないです sentences. Compare each with whether a Vたい sentence would mean something different.
Tip: on a foldable or tablet, use your pen directly on the page. Your strokes are saved in this browser as you work.
4. Resource wish list
Create 10 Nが欲しいです + 3 Nが欲しくないです sentences. Compare each with whether a Vたい sentence would mean something different.
5. Keep Nが欲しい distinct from Vたい
Use contrastive recall if the two kinds of want blur together.
Japanese Adaptive Recall
Why here: English 'want' maps to different Japanese structures depending on noun vs action.
How to use it for this lesson: Use contrast cards: 'want a laptop' → Nが欲しい; 'want to buy a laptop' → Vたい.
