~てしまう: Completion & Regret
Use Vてしまう for complete/finished action and for unintended or regrettable outcomes.
- て-form.
The same grammar can mean 'finish completely' or carry 'oops/unfortunately' nuance—very useful in incident narratives.
1. Context selects completion or unwanted-result nuance
Do not translate しまう mechanically as regret every time.
2. Read the situation, not just the form
Study the examples and identify the structural pattern before relying on the English translation.
Natural: I finished reading the whole book.
Structure: book all — read-て — completely did
Completion.
Natural: I accidentally/unfortunately deleted an important file.
Structure: important file — delete-て — ended-up
Regret/unwanted outcome.
3. Spoken contractions exist
~ちゃう / ~じゃう are common casual contractions (食べちゃう, 読んじゃう). Recognize them, but keep the full form as your production base.
4. Completion-or-oops worksheet
Write 10 scenarios and classify each use as COMPLETE or REGRET/ACCIDENT.
