から / まで: From, Until & Range
Use から and まで to express starting and ending points in time, place, and practical ranges.
- Time expressions and destination/location particles.
Schedules, support windows, travel, maintenance, and project timelines constantly need 'from X to Y'.
1. Mark the boundaries, not the motion itself
から marks the starting boundary; まで marks the ending boundary. Either can appear alone.
2. Use ranges in time and place
Study the examples and identify the structural pattern before relying on the English translation.
Natural: I work from 9 to 5.
Structure: 9 o'clock from — 5 o'clock until — work
Time range.
Natural: I go from Tokyo to Osaka.
Structure: Tokyo from — Osaka until — go
Spatial range.
Natural: It will be finished by Friday.
Structure: Friday limit by — finish
までに sets a deadline; distinguish it from continuous ~まで.
3. まで and までに are not interchangeable
五時まで働く = work until 5. 五時までに終わる = finish by 5. One describes continuation to a boundary; the other a deadline before/at it.
4. Schedule boundary worksheet
Build 12 time/place ranges and 4 deadlines.
