Wearing & Appearance: Result-State ~ている
Use 着ている, はいている, かぶっている, かけている, and している to describe what someone is wearing.
- Wearing verbs and ~ている.
This is a perfect example of ~ている as a result state: the act of putting something on has happened, and the resulting state continues.
1. 'Is wearing' is usually the resulting state
着ます is the action of putting on/wearing; 着ています describes the continuing state of having it on.
2. Describe a person's visible appearance
[{'label': 'Tanaka is wearing a blue shirt.', 'sample': '田中さんは青いシャツを着ています。' They) are wearing black shoes.', 'sample': '黒い靴をはいています。', 'reading': 'くろい くつ を はいて います。', 'natural': {'en': '(They) are wearing black shoes.', 'es': 'Consulta el significado natural en español.'}, 'literal': {'en': 'black shoes wear-て — exists', 'es': 'Observa la estructura literal japonesa y el orden de sus componentes.'}, 'note': {'en': 'Footwear state.', 'es': 'Observa si la oración describe una acción, un estado resultante, un deseo, un intento o una preparación.'}}, {'label': '(They) are wearing a hat.', 'sample': '帽子をかぶっています。', 'reading': 'ぼうし を かぶって います。', 'natural': {'en': '(They) are wearing a hat.', 'es': 'Consulta el significado natural en español.'}, 'literal': {'en': 'hat wear-て — exists', 'es': 'Observa la estructura literal japonesa y el orden de sus componentes.'}, 'note': {'en': 'Headwear.', 'es': 'Observa si la oración describe una acción, un estado resultante, un deseo, un intento o una preparación.'}}, {'label': '(They) are wearing glasses.', 'sample': '眼鏡をかけています。', 'reading': 'めがね を かけて います。', 'natural': {'en': '(They) are wearing glasses.', 'es': 'Consulta el significado natural en español.'}, 'literal': {'en': 'glasses put-on-て — exists', 'es': 'Observa la estructura literal japonesa y el orden de sus componentes.'}, 'note': {'en': 'Eyewear.', 'es': 'Observa si la oración describe una acción, un estado resultante, un deseo, un intento o una preparación.'}}]
3. Use appearance to identify someone
A visible description can help answer どの人 / だれ questions.
Natural: The person wearing the red shirt is Tanaka.
Structure: red shirt wearing person topic — Tanaka
Preview of noun qualification; focus on appearance meaning.
4. Character description worksheet
Draw or imagine four coworkers/fictional characters. Give each 3 appearance details using wearing-state ~ています and adjective+noun combinations.
INTERACTIVE WORKSHEET
4. Character description worksheet
Create 4 character cards with 3 wearing/appearance sentences each. Underline the て-form and mark RESULT STATE.
Tip: on a foldable or tablet, use your pen directly on the page. Your strokes are saved in this browser as you work.

5. Transfer to visual Japanese
Use Furigana Lens only if text in a real visual blocks reading.
Furigana Lens
Why here: Clothing labels/signage can contain unfamiliar kanji while grammar is already familiar.
How to use it for this lesson: Try reading first, then use Lens for blocking kanji and reread the whole phrase.
Use Furigana Lens →Language IDE
Why here: This lesson clarifies action vs result state.
How to use it for this lesson: Compare シャツを着ます with シャツを着ています and label ACTION vs STATE.
Debug wearing state →Mastery checkpoint
Answer from memory. Use every miss to identify the exact form or meaning distinction that needs another pass.
